Activity 2

approx. 20-40 minutes
Equipment: Sewing needle, magnet, cardboard, pen & a small bowl of water

DIY Survival Compass and Scavenger Hunt

Turn your home into an exciting adventure by creating your own compass and using it in a fun scavenger hunt!

Step One: Make the Compass
Grab a needle and rub it with a magnet in one direction about 30-40 times to magnetise it. Cut a small circle out of cardboard and label it with the directions (N, S, E, W). Float this circle on water in a small bowl, then gently place the magnetised needle on top. Watch as the needle rotates and aligns itself in a north-south direction. This direction, known as magnetic north, aligns with the Earth's magnetic field, helping you find your way!

Step Two: Scavenger Hunt
Use your compass to navigate and find these five objects as quickly as you can: a plush toy, something silver, a family photo, three books, and a cushion. You can only move in the direction your compass points, and remember—no running allowed! The fastest explorer to complete the challenge wins. If you only have one compass, take turns and time each player. Once an item is found, it can't be used by another player.

  2. Campfire Glow: Light up a small fire (if safe) or use candles and lanterns to create a magical campfire ambiance.

  3. Music: Play nature sounds or campfire songs for an immersive experience.

  4. Stargazing Fun: Chill under the stars and try to spot as many constellations as you can. Maybe even create your own!

  6. Campfire Games:

    • Campfire Storytelling: Gather around the “campfire” and start with a fun sentence like, “One night, a daring explorer stumbled upon a hidden treasure in the wildest jungle…” Take turns adding sentences to build the story. Be as wild and imaginative as you like until the story wraps up.

    • Spotlight Tag: Play spotlight tag around the garden. The person with the torch is “it” and must try to catch the others hiding in the dark.
